About me

Hi y’all! My name is Gaetano Ferrante and I am a Ph.D. candidate in Earth, Environmental and Planetary Sciences at Rice University, Houston TX. I am a Volcanologist whose work mainly focuses on physics-based numerical modeling of magmatic processes applied to Kīlauea Volcano, Hawai’i. I am also interested in using experimental approaches on natural or analog materials to investigate the rheology of magmas in order to clarify its controls on volcanic eruptions.

News

January 24: We just published a paper titled “Spatio-temporal evolution of rift volcanism controlled top-down by a deepening graben” in EPSL as the result of my master’s work at Alma Mater Studiorum – Università di Bologna. If you’re interested in rifting, volcanism and their connections, you should check it out at the following link: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.epsl.2024.118593. If you don’t have access to EPSL, you can download the pre-print version here!

November 23: My group and I just published a blog about a class field trip to California where we looked at old volcanoes and their deposits. If you want to see some very cool photos and learn about the science behind volcanic eruptions, you can visit the blog at the following link: https://eeps.rice.edu/news/2023/volcanoes-fieldtrip!
